Plagiarism regularly makes the headlines and universities are under pressure to tackle the problem decisively. Plagiarism involves using someone else’s words or ideas without acknowledging the source. It can take multiple forms, from cutting and pasting a patchwork of unreferenced texts to buying texts from paper mills. Crucially, it also includes the kinds of writing in which students sloppily pull together various ideas without due attention to academic referencing norms. The problem is that institutions’ reactions to plagiarism, through policy and disciplinary structures, often lack nuance. Universities often don’t seek to understand what leads students to plagiarise; they tend not to distinguish between different forms of the†¦show more content†¦At many institutions, students must include a cover page with all assignments stating that the work is their own. This adds perjury to the crime of plagiarism if they are caught. Some South African universities make it compulsory for an academic to immediately institute full disciplinary processes if he even suspects plagiarism. These tough measures make sense in an era when universities are increasingly risk averse. But this stern, one-size-fits-all approach fails to take intention into account. It doesn’t address the university’s own responsibility to develop students’ competence in writing. This means that an opportunity for educational engagement is missed and the problem of plagiarism, whatever its motivation, is ignored. Technology to teach, not police In some universities, students are encouraged to use Turnitin or other text-matching software before they submit assignments to their lecturers. This software is an excellent tool for helping novice writers to develop their work. A high percentage of matched text indicates that the student has not yet taken sufficient ownership of the concepts and ideas she is using. Fucking coconuts: Intra-racial discrimination â€Å"Oh my god you are such a fucking coconut;† that is a phrase I hear sometimes being by one Mexican to another. The word â€Å"fucking† is important in that sentence as it is inserted to emphasize the disapproval felt by the person doing the name calling. When someone is called a coconut, the person is being called out as to being white, whether it is acting white, dressing white, or speaking white. This person is brown on the outside, white on the inside. So then by that logic, it is a bad thing to be too assimilated to the American way of life. Then there is the word â€Å"paisa:† this word, in a nutshell, means too Mexican. Used to refer to those so weren’t born in the U.S. or those who weren’t brought over a young age so they speak English with an accent and remain primarily close to their Mexican heritage. Paisa is taken from Spanish word paisano and a paisano is someone who shares the same coun try of origin, usually from the parent’s country of birth as the child would be first generation American. Ideally I suppose then that there would be a middle ground, not too â€Å"white† and not too â€Å"paisa† but that ground does not exist. The line is too fine for it to not ever be crossed and worse yet, those who are called â€Å"paisa† by first generations see those first generations a disgrace to their heritage because they reject where they come from. This teacher knew about my original piece and she was not happy to see me beating my lake house to death, there’s only so much imagery one can use. Our entire school year together went this way, pushing and pulling, always dissatisfied with one another. In June, when the year came to a close, I knew that she had written some of her favored students’ letters, thanking them for being participants in her class, wishing them luck and giving them praise. She wandered the funeral parlor, looking at pictures and flowers, as if visiting wakes were her pastime. It was not until she approached me that I realized she was crying even harder than I was. She took her time reaching me, in slow motion strides, likely feeling just as uncomfortable as I was. When she reached me, she looked me right in the eye and pulled me into a suffocating embrace,. â€Å"Kali† she said, â€Å"I am so, so sorry. My own father passed away just three weeks ago, and I, I just, I completely feel your pain.† I was dumbfounded. I understood that she had also lost her father, but I didn’t see the connection between us just yet. She had rejected me in my most vulnerable form, my writing. That was not something that I was willing to so easily forgive. A couple of weeks later, she slipped into my study hall while I was doing a mindless homework assignment, reality not yet set in entirely. She walked toward me, arm outstretched with an envelope in her hand. She gave me a knowing nod, placed the envelope onto my desk and graced back into the hallway. I tore the seal and read my first of many letters from a woman I have come to know as Diane. She told me that her father, also had cancer, also passed away in six months time and he was her best friend too. It was not just this letter, but this act of kindness that taught me my greatest life lesson. People sometimes lose touch with what it means to be human. Egos and ideas may conflict with one another, but once the emotional barrier we so carefully craft is broken, we become more than just facade, pretense, impressions; we become human. I wouldn’t have said that Diane Geurin was a compassionate human being if you had asked me two years ago, but I wouldn’t have been able t o consider myself one either. Losing has taught us both how to appreciate life. For that lesson, I am eternally grateful.
